Introduction
When you first open your device, the most important goals are to create a secret that only you control (the recovery phrase) and to protect access to the device (the PIN). The recovery phrase is a human-readable backup of your private keys. If your device is lost or destroyed, the phrase — stored safely — lets you restore access to your funds on a new device. That is why writing it down and storing it offline is non-negotiable.
Unboxing and verification
Check that the packaging is sealed and that the device matches the model you ordered. Counterfeit devices exist, and tampering is a real risk. If anything looks off, contact the seller and do not proceed with setup.
Choosing a PIN
The PIN prevents someone with physical access from using your device to send funds. Choose a PIN that you can remember but is not easily guessable. Avoid birthdays and common sequences. If you forget the PIN, the device can be reset — but you will need your recovery phrase to restore funds. That is another reason to keep the phrase safe.
Recovery phrase storage
Write the words exactly, in order. Use the included materials or any secure medium that cannot be easily compromised. Avoid storing the phrase on cloud storage, photos, or text files. Consider a fireproof safe, a safety deposit box, or a durable metal backup solution if you hold large balances.
Installing apps and managing accounts
Ledger-style devices require small applications for each blockchain. Install only the apps for the coins you use. The companion app will let you add accounts and view balances; the private keys remain on-device. For advanced users, hardware wallets can be used with many third-party wallets — but always follow the compatibility guides and verify addresses on the device screen before signing.
Sending and receiving safely
When receiving funds, copy the address from your wallet and always double-check it on the device's screen. For outgoing transactions, review the destination address and the amount on the hardware wallet before confirming. This prevents malware on your computer from altering transactions.
Keeping everything up to date
Keep the companion apps and device firmware up to date. Updates often include security improvements. Only apply official updates from the manufacturer and verify signatures when available.
